Toll Road distress
published: Monday | October 2, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FEARS THAT residents of Portmore have been harbouring for months have finally been realised.

On construction of the toll road leading into Portmore, many were sceptical as to whether or not it would be the solution to the growing traffic woes in Portmore.

Since school reopened in September, there has been an increase in the traffic flow, which has resulted in a huge pile-up of traffic on entering and exiting the toll booths. It is extremely frustrating to leave home at 6:30/7:00 a.m., pay $60 to use a toll road that is jammed with traffic for almost the entire length of the road.

It was difficult dealing with the traffic when residents did not have pay to use the causeway, but it is now totally unbearable, as we are struggling to deal with both the high cost of the toll and the congestion, which starts from as early as 6:00 a.m. each day.

It is unbelievable and totally unacceptable. What are we paying for, what are we really paying for?

Something needs to be done to alleviate this problem, but in the interim, what relief, if any, will be given to the residents of Portmore, who have to fork out $60 each morning to go sit in traffic for hours twiddling their thumbs?

I am, etc.,
