Mayor McKenzie not interested in contesting general elections
published: Tuesday | October 3, 2006

Mayor of Kingston, Desmond Mckenzie, said he was not interested in contending general elections as a Member of Parliament at this time, quelling talks that he may be replacing the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) candidate for the Southern St. Andrew constituency, Courtney Spence, who has been dropped by the party for reasons that are still not clear.

Speaking to supporters at the JLP's Area One council meeting, Sunday afternoon, Mayor Mckenzie said his interest lay in maintaining control of the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation.

"I am not offering myself for any constituency in the Corporate Area to contest any seat in general elections," the Mayor said.

"My responsibility is to ensure that we increase our majority in the Corporate area and to hold on to the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation," he added to thunderous applause.
