Cops' firearms being tested
published: Wednesday | October 4, 2006

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

Forensic experts are now examining more than 124 assorted spent shells and at least nine firearms that were assigned to the policemen involved in Sunday's controversial operation in Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

This was confirmed yesterday by Acting Assistant Commissioner Granville Gause, who said his team has 14 days in which to complete its investigations and then submit a report to Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas.

Burned vending stalls

Residents of De La Vega City, Spanish Town, have claimed that members of a police party who went to their community early Sunday morning to warn a sound system operator about the playing of loud music beyond 2:00 a.m. did not only fire a volley of gunshots, but proceeded to burn a number of vending stalls along the road way.

This was among several other complaints filed against the lawmen at a community meeting held on Monday in the presence of ACP Denver Frater and Gause, Superintendent Harry Daley and Deputy Superintendent Meveral Smith.

After listening to the residents' complaints the BSI decided to set up a temporary office in Spanish Town to facilitate witnesses, but according to ACP Gause only one person turned up yesterday. This is in addition to 10 witnesses who turned up on Monday to give statements.
