Credit union awards grant to GSAT scholar
published: Wednesday | October 4, 2006

Black River, St. Elizabeth:

Under its schools' Savings Programme, the St. Elizabeth Co-operative Credit Union Limited (STECCUL), in association with the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League (JCCUL), has presented a bursary of $15,000 to 12-year-old Marvalyn Brown, for her excellent performance in the recent Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) examinations.

Excellent savings attitude

"Apart from her excellent savings attitude, she performed above average in the GSAT examination and she was considered by the schools' savings coordinator as the student most qualified to be this year's recip-ient," Dean Somers, marketing officer of STECCUL, explained.

Brown, who was a student of the Burnt Savannah Primary School is now attending the Maggotty High School. The bursary was presented to her by Mrs. Claudette Christie, public relations officer of the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League (JCCUL) at a recent presentation held at the STECCUL head office in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth.

"This bursary today, represents the level of interest that the local credit union has placed on the communities in which it operates. This can only get better," Christie said.

The programme was started three years ago at the Burnt Savannah Primary, and includes Goshen All- Age, Newcombe Valley Primary, Lewisville High, Mountainside Primary and Braes River Primary schools in the parish.
