Garvey Maceo blank Old Harbour 4-0
published: Wednesday | October 4, 2006

Adrian Frater, News Editor

WESTERN BUREAU:

GARVEY MACEO strengthened their claim for one of the two inter-zone places from Zone I of the ISSA/Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup yesterday when they defeated Old Harbour 4-0 to move 14 points - two adrift of red hot zone leaders, Glenmuir, on 16 points from six game.

In other games yesterday, a struggling Vere Technical (eight), and Central (eight) battled to a 2-2 draw in the Zone I fixture, while in Zone L, leaders Titchfield (23) widened their lead with a 1-0 win over St. Thomas, while Fair Prospect defeated Yallahs 2-0, Happy Grove blanked Seaforth 2-0, and Port Antonio trounced Paul Bogle 7-1.

Come this afternoon, Frome Technical and Spaldings, who are both sporting 100 per cent win records, will be among the teams gunning for victories when the competition continues with 16 games spanning eight of the 12 zones.

Highest stakes

While all the games should generate a fair amount of interest, the ones with the highest stakes should be the Zone A Montego Bay derby between St. James High and Herbert Morrison, the Zone C clash between Grange Hill and Manning's, the Munro against Black River Zone E contest and Islington against Tacky in Zone K.

Fresh from last weekend's 3-0 thrashing of champions Godfrey Stewart, the resurgent Manning's (seven) should be fired up to avenge their first round 1-0 to Zone C leaders, the unbeaten Grange Hill (13).

A win would put their bid to top the zone on track, while a defeat would put Grange Hill on the verge of securing an inter-zone place.

With Zone E leaders St Elizabeth Technical all but walking through the zone with six wins from seven starts, second-placed Munro (15) will be anxious to put some daylight between themselves and third-place Black River (13).

The Zone K clash between leaders Tacky (11) and fourth-place Islington (six) should be quite interesting as while Tacky have amassed their points through three wins, two draws and a defeat, the Islington team, which has drawn its six games, is among the competition's unbeaten teams.

TODAY'S GAMES
