George's should have a field day
published: Monday | October 9, 2006

Many-time champions St. George's College (St. GC) should have a prolific day against Oberlin High in one of six Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/JN/Pepsi Manning Cup games today.

In the other games, Excelsior tackle Tarrant High, Dunoon Technical versus St. Mary's College, Waterford host St. Andrew Technical High School, Innswood welcome Charlie Smith to St. Catherine, and Jonathan Grant travel to St. Catherine High.

Nineteen-time winners St. GC kept their very slim chances of advancing with a crucial 1-0 win over Jamaica College last week.

Defending champs lead

Defending champions Calabar lead the group with 15 points ahead of Jamaica College (JC) on 12 points, with St. GC close behind on nine points. Both Calabar and St. GC have two games remaining, while JC have three.

The Light Blues from North Street have the simplest of games against Oberlin and Cumberland and should finish the round on 15 points.

But that will not be enough to topple either JC or Calabar, although both teams will be playing each other. Calabar are on 15 points and should easily beat Oberlin if they lose to JC again.

Meanwhile, JC on 12 points should secure wins over Oberlin and Cumberland, even if they lose to Calabar to finish on 18 points.

Football is round so St. GC will remain hopeful and look to pump in the goals just in case it is needed in the end.

Group A leaders Waterford on 15 points should continue their winning ways against STATHS, while second-place Excelsior on 14 points, should do likewise against Tarrant.

In Group C action, Charlie Smith should record another win over Innswood and the St. Catherine/Jonathan Grant encounter could go either way.
