Charlie Smith blank St Catherine - Georges wallop Oberlin 15-0
published: Tuesday | October 10, 2006

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

Former champions Charlie Smith turned in a workman-like performance to beat St. Catherine High 4-0 in their Group C, ISSA/JN/Pepsi Manning Cup match at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.

In the other games yesterday, St. George's College kept their slim chances alive in Group E with a 15-0 mauling of Oberlin High, the biggest margin recorded this season.

St. George's remainded in third place on 12 points, behind leaders Jamaica College and Calabar on 15 points.

JC which thrashed Cumberland 8-0 have two games remaining, while St. George's have only one match to go, against Cumberland. Calabar also have two matches outstanding.

Whipped

In Group A action, former champion Excelsior whipped Tarrant High 7-0 and Dunoon Technical crushed St. Mary's College 5-1.

Kenton Smith scored twice in the 59th & 72nd minutes and was ably assisted by Michael Russell (34th) and Craigy Wint (69th) for Charlie Smith's comfortable win.

Charlie Smith, winners in 1988, 1990 and 1995, had already advanced to the next round and rested a number of starters, but still had enough power to dismiss St. Catherine.

Charlie Smith have completed the double over St. Catherine, having won the first game 9-0 to move 21 points and coach Jerome Waite is looking forward to the next stage of the competition.

Objective

"The whole objective is to move on to the next round. Presently we are already advanced to that stage so the most important thing now is to focus on the next game and the next round," said Waite.

"Today we rested some players and gave some youngsters (a game) who have not played all season and today they held their own," he noted.

St. Catherine remain on eight points in fourth position and are out of contention for a second round spot.

Losing coach Dwight Barnett said his tactics did not work.

"We knew that this would be a tough match because in the first game we got nine. We came here with a game plan but it did not work out so we have to go back to the drawing board."
