St Elizabeth has new champion
published: Wednesday | October 11, 2006

A new school will represent St. Elizabeth in The Gleaner's Children's Own Spelling Bee Competition, as Johmar Brown of Burnt Savannah Primary took the parish title on the first day of the parish finals.

He beat Rathelianna Levy of Glen Stuart Primary, who had dominated the competition for the past five years.

"I didn't think I was going to win. I just wasn't sure of myself," Johmar said.

Overcoming

Meanwhile, Lawre Johnson of Bishop Gibson High, in Manchester became the first three-time winner, when she triumphed in the Manchester parish finals. She overcame a strong effort from Crystal Mason of Porus Primary. "I know the first mistake will get you out, so I had to focus on spelling my word," she said.

The Spelling Bee competition continues today in Clarendon and Kingston. The Kingston parish finals will be held at the Gleaner Company's head office at North Street, central Kingston.
