Sticking together
published: Wednesday | October 11, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

While I do not recommend the action, it is certainly interesting to note how people in the Ivory Coast reacted to the dangerous dumping of toxic oil sludge produced by Trafigura.

Last month, unable to get hold of the oil company's officials, a number of angry protesters caught a minister of government in a roadblock and together, gave him a sound 'stick licking'. Shortly thereafter, the Cabinet resigned and Prime Minister Charles Banny named new ministers. Whether intentional or by slip of the tongue, the prime minister later congratulated the people on 'sticking together' during the crisis.

As for the unfortunate minister, his name, by strange coincidence, is Innocent Anaky.

I am, etc.,

KEN JONES
