Godfrey Stewart face must-win situation against Petersfield
published: Wednesday | October 11, 2006

Adrian Frater, News Editor

WESTERN BUREAU:

CHAMPIONS GODFREY Stewart High School will be in another do-or-die situation this afternoon when they meet arch-rivals Petersfield in one of two Zone C games in the ISSA/Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup.

Even as Godfrey Stewart (13 points) face a must-win situation, a victory for Petersfield (13) would not only see them advance to the inter-zone round, but would also put through current group leaders Grange Hill (16), who are idle today.

"We know that our fate is in our own hands," said Godfrey Stewart's coach, Carl Palmer, following last Saturday's 1-0 win against Grange Hill which rekindled their inter-zone hopes. "Once we win our two remaining games we should be in contention to move forward," he said.

Advancing teams

While the champions will be in a desperate bid for survival, victory for teams such as Zone A contenders Herbert Morrison (11), Zone D's second-placed team, Cedric Titus (six), Zone F's Manchester High (eight), Garvey Maceo (15) of Zone I, Zone J's Charlemont (17) and Zone K's Tacky (15) would see them advancing to the inter-zone round.

Based on first-round results, the passage should be relatively easy for the likes of Herbert Morrison, who should repeat or better their first-round 1-0 win over Maldon (nine); Manchester High, who are expected to improve on their first-round 1-1 draw against struggling May Day (one), Charlemont, who are expected to repeat their first-round win against Dinthill (four) and Tacky, who had a comfortable first-round 2-0 win over Oracabessa (10).

However, it should be a battle royal for the likes of Petersfield who, despite their first-round 2-0 win over the champions, face the daunting task of beating a team fresh from a win over zone leaders Grange Hill in their last outing and whose survival depends on winning today.

Cedric Titus should face a monumental task against Group D leaders and early inter-zone qualifiers Ocho Rios, who not only handed them a 2-0 first-round defeat, but remain the only team sporting a 100 per cent win record in the 65 team competition. Garvey Maceo, who lost 1-0 to Vere (eight ) in the first round, should also be faced with a tough task.
