Six Jamaicans to be conferred with OJ
published: Friday | October 13, 2006

PSOJ president Beverley Lopez is stepping down.

The annual 'Investiture and Presentation of National Honours and Awards' ceremony will be held at King's House, on Heroes Day, Monday, October 16, starting at 9:00 a.m.

The event is open to members of the public, who are expected to observe certain protocols. Those attending must dress formally for the occasion and must be seated by 8:30 a.m.

Jamaica's fourth highest honour, the Order of Jamaica (OJ), will be bestowed upon six outstanding Jamaicans at the ceremony.

The honour will be the highest given at this year's ceremony.

Roll of honour

The recipients are Dr. Rae Davis, for his contribution to education; Ray Hadeed, for pioneering service to manufacturing; Beverly Lopez, for private sector leadership; Neville 'Teddy' McCook, for his service to athletics; Professor Owen Morgan, for his contribution to medicine and medical edu-cation; and Paul Harrison, for services to the judiciary.

The Order of Jamaica (OJ) is the fourth of five honours in the 'Order of Societies of Honour.' An act of Parliament - the National Honours and Awards Act - established the Order of Jamaica in 1969.

The motto of the order is: 'For a Covenant of the People.' It is bestowed upon any Jamaican citizen of outstanding distinction or upon 'honorary members' - distinguishing citizen of a country other than Jamaica.

Ms. Lopez, the only female in this year's group of OJ honourees, expressed gratitude for being selected. "I am deeply honoured that my work at the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica is being recognised. My family and I are elated, "she said.
