TheGleaner-sponsored Reggae Marathon Challenge is once again slated to be an important feature of this year's event.
Denise Dixon and Michelle Belnavis as well as The Gleaner's own Oral Anderson, a seasoned marathon competitor, will be participating in the challenge, now in its third year. With training now on the way, all are anticipating the December 2 sixth staging of Reggae Marathon when they will have the opportunity to put all that they have experienced to the test.
According to president of the Jamdammers Running Club, organisers of the event Debra Valentine: All participants are required to have the necessary medical examinations and must follow a training programme based on their current level of fitness to prepare them for either the marathon (26.2 miles) or the half marathon (13.1 miles)." Participants can either run, walk or run/walk.
Each participant is thoroughly checked by a medical doctor and declared fit to participate in the event. Mrs. Valentine said it is important that they are properly prepared and "this means following a training programme that will gradually improve their levels of fitness so that they can comfortably cover the distance on race day. We encourage participants to be adequately trained and prepared so that they can enjoy the experience and feel a sense of accomplishment on completing the event."
Once participants are cleared by the medical doctor, the Jamdammers Running Club, under the direction of Assistant Race Director Gina Harrison oversees their training.
Having the right gear is also integral to the event and this year the Challenge participants will once again be outfitted with proper shoes by Western Sports through their Puma brand.
As part of its contribution, The Gleaner Company will be assisting the organisers to provide transportation as well as accommodation for the participants. Sponsorship is also being provided by JUTA Tours and the Point Village Hotel.
