Strickland double spurs Arnett win
published: Monday | October 16, 2006

Audley Boyd, Assistant Editor - Sport

ARNETT GARDENS continued to shake off their awful start by racking up their second consecutive win, as they hammered newcomers Naggo Head 4-1 in a fifth round Wray and Nephew National Premier League match at Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

Leon Strickland (65th, 81st), led the scoring for the 'Junglists' with a double, while Jonathan Williams (39th) and second half substitute Kevin 'Pele' Wilson (90+) accounted for the others.

Carlos Barrett scored for Naggo Head, reducing the game's margin to 2-1 at the 72nd minute. But his debutant team could not sustain the intensity and eventually folded after the visitors restored a two-goal margin when Strickland took a defence-spittling pass off Marcelino Blackburn and rammed past goalkeeper Kelvin Brown.

True reflection

The scoreline gave a true reflection of the general run of play in a game where both teams employed different styles.

Arnett, though blessed with more quality, virtually played a passing game, while Naggo Head dribbled too much and made too many passes when they were not under pressure.

To make matters worse, the Portmore-based team was reduced to 10 men in the first half at the 37th minute, as Xavier Watt picked up a second bookable offence. He got his first yellow card at the 33rd minute.

The first goal came two minutes after the sending off and it was all downhill afterwards, for the team which remained on two points.

Win streak

Arnett, which had only a point after its first three games, now move to seven - winning both matches it has played since expelling seven players from the club.

"This is a stepping stone. We're moving now and this is what we want, more consistency," said new coach Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey.

He added: "Since we imposed the discipline we've been getting more effort. That is all we're asking for."

Naggo Head coach, Harold Thomas, said: "The players have to take responsibility for what's going on. This is disastrous.

"We're playing like 11 seals, everybody wants their own ball."

Arnett Gardens completed the double as their Under-21 team whipped Naggo Head 5-1.

Arnett Gardens - 4

Jonathan Williams 39th, Leon Strickland 65th, 81st, Kevin 'Wilson 90+
