The Editor, Sir:
Regarding your September 25 article, 'Colon cancer warnings not being heeded', I would like to provide some information about the cause of this disease. Without knowing the cause, modern medicine has only been able to offer "early detection".
Colon cancer is a disease of the 'developed' world, primarily North America, Europe and Australia. As the rest of the world adopts western habits, they are also experiencing an increase in the incidence of colon cancer. What is it about the western world that causes such damage to the colon?
Insufficient dietary fiber
Dr. Denis Burkitt is the British physician who proposed the theory that we in the West consume insufficient amounts of dietary fiber. This, he believed, causes chronic constipation which leads to many colon diseases. Recent research has disproved his theory, and has shown that dietary fiber is unrelated to colon cancer.
But Dr. Burkitt had an alternative hypothesis, based on his many years of medical practice in Africa. He noticed that the natives all used the squatting position for bodily functions. This natural position results in complete evacuation of wastes, preventing the build-up of toxins that can lead to inflammation and cancer.
Correct theory
Based on my own research over the past five years, I am convinced that this second theory of Dr. Burkitt is the correct one. I have compiled my research at a website and I would invite you to have a look at it. The website is called http://NaturesPlatform.com/
health_benefits.html.
By understanding and eliminating the cause of colon cancer, we can prevent much needless suffering and the waste of billions of dollars (and pounds) being spent on its treatment.
I am, etc.,
