WESTERN BUREAU:
FROME TECHNICAL and Clarendon College won in regular time, Petersfield in extra time and Charlemont by the penalty shoot-out route as they advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2006 Ben Francis Cup Knockout competition in yesterday's first round.
Frome Technical handed DeCarteret their first defeat of the season, outscoring them 4-3 at the St. Elizabeth Technical High School, while at Jarrett Park Petersfield scored a 2-1 win over Ocho Rios after the teams ended 1-1 in regulation time.
At Brancourt, Clarendon College clipped Spalding 1-0 while at Dinthill, Charlemont defeated Tacky 4-3 on penalties after regular and extra-time play ended with the score at 2-2.
At Jarrett Park, Petersfield dominated the early exchanges but it was Ocho Rios who took the lead in the 15th minute through Zico Lewis.
However, Petersfield struck back three minutes later when Troy Reid found the equaliser. Petersfield subsequently got the decisive goal in the second period of extra-time through Keido Dobson.
This victory is so sweet because it was a battle all the way for us and we ended up beating a team that had not lost all season," said Petersfield's coach, Audley 'Tom Tom' Thomas. "Our plan is to keep rolling on and hopefully we might just end up with a title or two."
With Petersfield heaping on the early pressure, Ocho Rios grabbed the lead when Lewis pounced on a superb pass from Shavar Brown who turned inside neatly and slotted wide of goalkeeper Carlyle Henry.
Went into overdrive
Finding themselves behind, Petersfield went into over-drive and the extra effort paid off when they won a right-side corner.
The kick taken by Reid dipped viciously into the goal, giving goalkeeper Keddar Whyte no chance and making the half-time score 1-1.
In the second half it was a ding-dong affair with both teams creating good chances but failing to finish on target.
Ocho Rios missed the easiest of chances in the 70th minute when Davion Green broke free on the goalkeeper but fired straight at him.
Seven minutes later, Reid missed an equally-easy opportunity for Petersfield when he fired wide from six yards.
With Ocho Rios missing another chance on the stroke of full-time when Green struck the right upright with a close-range effort, the action went into extra-time where it remained fast and furious, swinging from end to end.
Down into extra-time play and a penalty shoot-out looming, Dobson gave Petersfield the victory when he won possession in a crowd of players, worked himself into a shooting possession and then fired home, making the final score 2-1.
