Cost too high for football stardom
published: Friday | October 20, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am not sure what Jamaica can gain in sending these Reggae Boyz to the World Cup. I know that this will bring us some form of advertising for our country but can Jamaica really afford this. Can we spend this kind of money on this national team.

I understand that we are going to pay a football technical director one million U.S. dollars to coach this team. Would we pay our local coaches this? Can't this money be used to fix up the hospitals or police stations instead. Where is this money going to come from?

The name Reggae Boyz also needs to change. We need to call it Reggae Team Jamaica, to keep up with the high level of international players names.

Maybe, that is why they keep losing. Don't get me wrong. I think getting to the World Cup is great for these players, but at what and whose cost. Are the Reggae Boyz going to be like our Reggae airline - in the red all the time, just to say we have one.

I am, etc.,

PETER SHOUCAIR, J.P.

Kingston
