Camperdown advance to second round
published: Friday | October 20, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

IT WAS better late than never for Camperdown as they became the final team to book its spot in the second round of the ISSA/ Pepsi/JN Manning Cup following a 5-2 victory over Tivoli at the Edward Seaga Complex, yesterday.

The east Kingston team has now assured itself a spot in the competition's final 12 at the expense of Campion, despite a valiant effort by the latter who beat Meadow-rook 3-1, but would have needed a Camperdown loss in order to progress.

Defender Ramone Waite netted a 37th and 53rd minute brace for Camperdown, while striker Michael Johnson (fifth), Shaun Francis (61st) and Vernal Smart (68th) had one each. Marlon Abra-hams also netted twice for Tivoli with a 37th minute and a 70th minute free-kick.

Camperdown end the second round on 22 points, two ahead of Campion, who had been ahead of Camperdown with two games left to go in the group.

Group winners, Eltham, who topped the group with 24 points, will now put their unbeaten streak on the line when they face 2004 champions, Excelsior as Walker Cup action gets under way today. In the day's other game, defending Manning Cup champions, Calabar, will take on Group A, runners-up, Waterford.

Meanwhile, Norman Manley booked its spot in the Walker Cup following a 1-1 draw with Edith Dalton James, at Tinson Pen, on Wednesday.

The 2002 champions began the day on 23 points, two ahead of second-place Spanish Town. However, the St. Catherine team suffered a major blow as they were nipped 3-2 by third-place Donald Quarrie. Norman Manley topped the group on 24 points, while Spanish Town remain on 21.

In the group's other fixture, second-from-bottom St. Jago, and bottom-place Mona ended their season with a 1-1 draw.
