MUMBAI, India (AP):
WEST INDIES opening batsman Chris Gayle was fined 30 per cent of his match fee yesterday for his on-field banter with Australian batsman Michael Clarke during the ICC Champions Trophy Group A match.
Match referee Mike Procter found Gayle guilty of a breach of International Cricket Council's code of conduct at a hearing, a day after the West Indies recorded a stunning 10-run win against Australia.
"What started off as banter between the two players got out of hand and Gayle went over the top in his reactions," Procter said in a statement.
Went too far
"We do not want robots on the field and we want to ensure players play with enthusiasm and passion," he added. "We saw a great deal of that during an excellent match on Wednesday, but there is a line between what is acceptable and what is not and Chris (Gayle) crossed it."
Meanwhile, Clarke was found not guilty of the same charge in a separate hearing.
The charges were laid by the two on-field umpires, Mark Benson and Rudi Koertzen, as well as third umpire Aleem Dar, and the trio attended both hearings.
Australia next play against England at Jaipur tomorrow while the West Indies take on India at Ahmadabad next Thursday.
