Coming clean on Trafigura
published: Saturday | October 21, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Trafigura scandal is no ordinary event, though confusing at times.

Biblical guidance may be relevant here. See Exodus 9:16 "... and in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up for to show in thee my power." And from Romans 5:13 and 19: ".... sin is not imputed when there is no law ... for as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous..."

Therefore, the Members of Parliament and the whistle-blowers were all raised up for such a time as this and should be lauded. They deserve our pardon.

For justice to be done there must be an act of injustice, we must now use this glorious opportunity to insist on proper house cleaning and enact laws to prevent any such re-currence, irrespective of who governs our country. If we fail, we will only be inviting the 10 plagues of Egypt on ourselves.

There is still no clear understanding to date on this whole episode. The Prime Minister has not said much and the Opposition Leader has been dancing all over the place with different versions leaving us no option than to come to our own conclusion.

left to own discretion

In the absence of any direct code of conduct implemented by laws to control politicians and campaign funding everyone is left to his/her own discretion. How discreet is $31 million is anybody's guess. After listening to all the political parties on the subject, it's either the three are one and the same or they are the same one.

None of the parties is willing to disclose their sources of finances; the Opposition opts for exposure but not disclosure, how to do one without the other, heaven knows. I believe if the $31 million was shared equally among the parties, not a whisle would have been blown. We all owe it to our children and the nation to see to it that things don't continue the same old way. You can't put expensive gifts in an old dirty cabinet, so it must be cleared and clean before Christmas as this is the time of year when we get unexpected gifts from friends far and wide.

And since we are at it, let us check out all other voluntary organisations to see who is bribing whom. Has anyone noticed how we are being bribed for votes on the television. This is the sixth of 10 plagues for this government and we do not want all 10.

Come clean on contribution.

I am, etc.,
