LETTER OF THE DAY: More questions on Trafigura
published: Saturday | October 21, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

The Prime Minister, in addressing supporters in Hanover on Sunday, October 8, said, "We will not be mixed up in any cass cass. We are the government and we will deal with the issues." This leads me to wonder if the Honourable Prime Minister does not think the Trafigura Beheer fiasco would affect the country at large.

Let me state that I have no affiliation with any 'P', but I wonder -

If there is nothing wrong with the transaction, why is the Government saying they will return it?

How can the public be assured the funds were returned?

Can Trafigura Beheer accept the funds if returned?

Where did the J$10m used at the PNP's conference in September come from?

Why would there be an account in the name of CCOC which the PNP accesses?

Should Colin Campbell be declared a saint for being the fall guy?

Why doesn't the Prime Minister clear the air?

Why did the PNP say the funds were a gift while Trafigura Beheer denied same, saying it is a commercial agreement?

What is the nature of the agreement and since commercial agreements affect the country, why does the populace not know about it?

Who has ultimate responsibility for the country?

How can the Prime Minister be misinformed about a "donation" of that size? Shouldn't any responsible person check the source and verify the reasons behind such a gift?

The claim of political mileage by the JLP, if the situation was reversed, what would the PNP do?

The cry that banking laws have been broken, we have a responsibility to protect our country as well as respecting privacy. Should we understand that if a terrorist plot was uncovered in the bank, it should not be disclosed? I think not.

As citizens of Jamaica, we have a right to know what is going on and what steps are being taken to correct the improprieties. Come on Madam Prime Minister, as a woman, I am highly disappointed, and I think it is time to either 'step up or step down'.

I am, etc.,

BOBETTE FRANCIS
