Glenmuir, Clarendon College in mouth-watering Ben Francis KO clash
published: Saturday | October 21, 2006

Adrian Frater, New Editor

Western Bureau:

A quartet of teams will be hunting their second win of the 2006 2006 Ben Francis Knockout football competition, while four others will be making their debut when the competition resumes this afternoon with four quarter-final round games at different locations across rural Jamaica.

The games, which will see the winners advancing to the competition's semi-finals, are as follows: Titchfield against Charlemont at Carder Park, Glenmuir versus Clarendon College at Brancourt; Munro College up against Frome Technical at St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS); and, William Knibb against Petersfield at Jarrett Park.

While Charlemont, Clarendon College, Petersfield and Frome should all be confident following victories in their first-round games on Wednesday, Titchfield, Glenmuir, William Knibb and Munro, who all drew first round byes, should all be gunning to make an impressive statement.

Based on traditional rivalry and the impressive manner in which they won their respective zones in the preliminary stage of the daCosta Cup, the game between Glenmuir and Clarendon College could well take top billing. Glenmuir had six wins and a draw in winning Zone I of the daCosta Cup while Clarendon College, 1-0 first-round Ben Francis KO winners over Spalding, had seven wins and a draw in topping Zone H.

exciting match-up

The game between Frome, which had their worst game of the season in their 4-3 victory over Decarteret, and Munro College, who are bowing into the Ben Francis KO today, should be an exciting match-up as both teams seem fairly competent.

Munro, which won the competitive Zone C of the daCosta Cup ahead of STETHS and Black River, have seven wins from nine starts this season while Frome, a favourite of some pundits to win the daCosta Cup, scored six wins, one draw and one defeat in topping Zone B ahead of Rusea's and the exciting Anchovy.

Having survived a nail-biter in their first-round 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Tacky, which had held them to a 2-2 regulation time score, Charlemont should be confident of notching a a second Ben Francis KO win today. However, having survived the rigours of the mega-Zone L of the daCosta Cup, Titchfield should be coming in high on confidence.

The Jarrett Park clash between the confident Petersfield, which ended Ocho Rios' unbeaten run in their first-round Ben Francis KO clash with an extra-time 2-1 win, should be in for a stern test from William Knibb, which topped Zone A of the daCosta Cup ahead of traditional powerhouses such as Cornwall College, Herbert Morrison and St. James High School.

"We have been having a great season to date and we intend to continue all the way to a title or two," said Petersfield's coach Audley 'Tom Tom' Thomas. "The players understand what is expected of them and I am confident that they can get the job done."

However, having beaten such vaunted opponents as Cornwall College and St. James High twice this season, the Cassman William-coached William Knibb must be considering themselves as serious title contenders.
