The management of the Gleaner Company Ltd. is deeply concerned about the provisions of the proposed 'Sunset Legislation' governing Cricket World Cup 2007.
We believe provisions of the act, if unaltered, will have a profoundly negative impact on private businesses and the country in general.
When parliamentarians go to the House on Tuesday to debate the Sunset Legislation, we strongly urge that they make amendments to a number of clauses which are detrimental to the operation of private business in this country.
The bill, for example, places serious constraints on the ability of the media, during the period of Cricket World Cup, to rely on sponsorship, even for the provision of information, criticisms or reviews.
There will also be serious restrictions in the so-called 'Red Zone.' If this and other provisions are allowed to stand, the Government must commit to honour any claims from private businesses which suffer loss as a result of the implementation of the Sunset Legislation.
