Church had no guts in the first place
published: Sunday | October 22, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

I read in last Sunday's Gleaner where Monsignor Richard Albert stated to the effect that the Church had lost its guts. I am in total disagreement with that statement. It is totally baseless.

The Church is extremely obsequious to the powers that be, and will therefore turn a blind eye to anything that does not directly affect or threaten the 'sanctity' of its image.

Losing something means that you had to have had it in the first place, right? Has the Church EVER demonstrated that it had any guts? Give me one case in the history of this country where the Church spoke out on REAL issues that affect the welfare of this country. Maybe one could mention demonstrations against Brokeback Mountain, girls wearing mini skirts, and nude weddings. But of course, I did say REAL issues.

Furthermore, if it had had any guts (that we had not known about), this Trafigura affair and the Sandals Whitehouse issue have seen to its total disembowelment.

I am, etc.,
