No CXC weeding out
published: Sunday | October 22, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

Ardenne High School appreciates the correction that Dr. Ralph Thompson has made in the Sunday Gleaner of October 8, 2006, concerning the error which omitted Ardenne High School from the top 10 traditional high schools in the analysis published in the Sunday Gleaner of October 1, 2006. There still remains, however, two misconceptions which persist concerning these results.

1. We do not "allow" or disallow students who have being pursuing CXC-CSEC subjects from sitting these at the examinations. In fact, all students are required to register for all courses which they have pursued in 10th or 11th grade. In other words, we do not screen our students, either at the end of 10th grade or at the time of registering for the examinations in 11th grade. Therefore, our total cohort registers for the examinations and is allowed to sit the examinations.

2. The first results which CXC sent to us for the English language examination taken in May 2006, were erroneous. We had a total of 14 students obtaining Ungraded or 'Us'. These students had taken the examination and many had gained eight Grade Ones in their other subjects. Subsequently, we were sent the correct results. These results were not available to Dr. Thompson, therefore incorrect data were used to calculate the percentage of our students' passes. Therefore, using the correct results with a cohort of 326, which Dr. Thompson uses, we have a percentage pass of 91.10 per cent in English language.

I am, etc.,

ESTHER TYSON (Mrs.)

Principal
