The part-time gardener
published: Sunday | October 22, 2006

Tired of all the back-breaking work involved in gardening? If you are prepared to pay, there is help available. - Contributed

You love the look of well-kept gardens, but you are just too busy to do all the grooming involved. Lucky you, there are many companies in the yellow pages now offering residential services for the home garden.

For those who might be worried that such services are costly, Paul Bernard of Nature's Paradise, in Kingston, states that quotations are done based on size and what clients ask for.

"Some people want so many things to be done," he notes.

Most times a site visit is required. If it is a big property, it may require more than one persons to do maintenance work. If it is smaller, just one worker might be adequate.

Some residencies, Bernard notes, require visits twice per month and some only once, especially a residential complex with very little lawn space.

However, dwellings like Hopefield, a town-house complex located in St. Andrew, have someone stationed there everyday.

Own gardener

"Some places require their own gardener," Bernard notes.

Residential services, in addition to basic landscaping, include the following maintenance activities:

Weeding of flower beds

Cutting and edging of lawn areas

Replacement of missing plants

Sanitation and general maintenance of water feature

Raking and sweeping of entire property using leaf blowers, brooms and rakes

Tilling of flower beds

Tending of hedges

Trimming and pruning of plants and trees

Spraying to prevent pests

Fertilising flower beds, plants and grass.

What does your garden need? Flip to the yellow pages and you may find someone to fulfil your gardening dreams.
