Scrappy play fails to yield goal
published: Monday | October 23, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Wray and Nephew National Premier League newcomers August Town and Boys' Town had to settle for a point apiece as they slugged and scrapped their way to a 0-0 draw at the August Town playing field yesterday.

Having just registered their first win of the season last week, the Red Brigade, dressed in their unfamiliar white and red stripe, would have hoped to keep the wins coming in, but found the gutsy August Town team a very prickly pros-pect. In fact, the home team had quite a few opportunities to snatch a goal and perhaps all three points from the fixture.

Out in front

Aphas Bernard certainly looked to have put them out in front when he muscled his way into the area in the 20th minute.

However, he failed to get the better of Boys' Town custodian Philmore Crumbie who reacted quickly, stretching a leg to snuff the attempted poke towards goal.

"We are a little disappointed; when you play at home you really expect to win and I don't think we played our usual game, but Boys' Town didn't let us," said August Town coach Christopher Bender.

"We expected a physical and a tough game from Boys' Town, that's typical Boys' Town, but overall we just didn't play," he added.

The Red Brigade also had their chances to wrest away all three points from the encounter. A glaring one fell to Boys' Town strongman Oniel Thompson who found himself unmarked at the back post in first half injury time. He rose high and headed powerfully but the attempt sailed over the crossbar, giving August Town custodian Devon Haughton no part to play in the affair.

"It wasn't the type of game that you were going to see our skills really displayed out there, but we got a point away from home and we are happy with that," said Boys' Town coach Andrew Price who now sees his unbeaten team on eight points - the same as August Town - after drawing a fifth game.
