General Accident again lifted the Business House Netball Association (BHNA) major championship, this time dominating the Super League, to add to earlier victories in the Open League and Rally competitions.
They continued to beat Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) 'A' at every juncture, as on Saturday they topped BNS 'A' 52-49 at the National Indoor Sports Centre in the finals.
A number of finals were played earlier. FirstCaribbean International Bank (FCIB) were winners in the Junior League, beating ISSA Transport 26-23; Intermediate 'B' champion NEM defeated Lasco 26-13; while Wisynco outplayed Jamaica Public Service 26-18 to be crowned Intermediate 'A' winners. The Senior League champions were National Commercial Bank (NCB) 'A', which clipped the Sugar Company of Jamaica 35-33.
Although General Accident came out on top for the third consecutive year, the Super League championship title was not always certain. At the start of the match it was obvious that BNS 'A' came to win. This they appeared capable of for the first two quarters when leading 16-12, 30-26. Propelled by the pot covers, shouts of "upset" and their own 'penny section', BNS 'A', it seemed, was sure to win. "Bout time fi something change up tonight," one spectator said.
Pivotal change
In the second quarter though, General Accident made one pivotal change, as Oberon Pitterson was sent from goal attack to goal defence to boost their defence as Suzette DeSouza's height had posed a problem for General Accident in the circle. She almost never missed catches and kept the goal defenders off their feet. By the end of the third quarter General Accident led 41-40. The spectators knew there was no turning back.
By the fourth quarter, BNS 'A' seemed tired. They increased their turnovers and General Accident capitalised on more rebounds. As the minutes decreased, General Accident increasingly controlled the match to put an end to BNs' hopes.
"Every year it's the same thing. It's like deja vu, every year you come and you have a game plan. We went out there, it was competitive, it's just a lot of turnovers, but [overall] it was a good season," captain of BNS 'A', Suzette DeSouza, said after the match.
On the opposite side of the court, captain Nadine Bryan was all smiles.
"It's a good feeling, it feels good with all that has been going on with us this year, for us to come out
victorious."
Bryan said she was never uncertain about the outcome of the game.
"Our plan was really to go out and play hard, start out with a fight. We really are used to coming from behind and to be on top, just fight to the end."
