Settlement scheme holders to get land titles
published: Wednesday | October 25, 2006

The Ministry of Agriculture and Lands will soon be hitting the road to deliver land titles to residents of land settlement schemes.

Some of these schemes date back to the 1940s when the government sold land under special terms to persons who would otherwise remain landless.

According to Roger Clarke, Minister of Agriculture and Lands, the Government has not moved swiftly enough to deliver titles to persons to whom land was given for agriculture and housing purposes.

"We will be handing over in excess of 250 certificates of title to beneficiaries under the land settlement programme, as a first step to releasing all these titles," he said.

Islandwide roadshow

Mr. Clarke noted that this would coincide with the ministry's islandwide roadshow, which is to be launched today. According to him, title ceremonies will be held in Clarendon on November 1, Trelawny on November 2, Ocho Rios on November 15 and Port Antonio on November 22.

Many original land owners are now deceased, so plans are in place to transfer the lands to the estates of the deceased.
