Time longer than road
published: Wednesday | October 25, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

It is by no means surprising to see a recently published poll suggesting that the majority of residents in Portmore support the toll road, by virtue of them taking it instead of the so-called 'suitable alternative.'

Each day, the residents of the Sunshine City, now dubbed 'Tollmore', are faced with some heart-wrenching decisions: Should I pay the tax or risk not reaching work on time and possibly losing my job? If I lose my job, who will take care of my family? Can I afford to take my child to school late? Can my child constantly go to school tired because he or she has to wake up extra early?

The tax levied on the residents of Portmore is not going away, as some would hope, and so the authorities will continue to 'market' perceived positives and highlight the weaknesses of the resistance. This will result in the yielding of the faint-hearted, and the killing of the spirit of others who are forced to go against their consciences.

While the rest of the nation seems to have moved on because the actions of the residents may not have immediately reaped the desired result, there are thousands who are resolved that one-day the truth will be revealed and justice will be served. There are those who quietly endure it and stand firm in their conviction and faith, not willing to roll over and die. And so I am reminded of two phrases 'Time is longer than rope' and 'he who feels it knows it'

I am, etc.,

TOLLMORE RESIDENT
