Westmoreland district mourns child's death
published: Thursday | October 26, 2006

Dalton Laing, Gleaner Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

There is a blanket of sadness over Blackness district in Westmoreland, as family and friends mourn the tragic death of 12-year-old Devern Brown.

The Friendship All-Age School student was walking home from school about 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, along the Solas main road, when he was reportedly hit by a car.

"Me run until me reach the scene and when me look me couldn't believe say a me son lie down dead," said his mother, Marlene Henry.

The youngster was reportedly hit when he tried to cross the street from the shop where he stopped to buy himself a treat.

He was hit by a Toyota Corolla motor car driven by a Montego Bay resident. The lad sustained injuries to his head and chest, and died on the spot.

No arrests have been made in the incident as no eyewitness has come forward.

But Devern's father, Silas Brown, claims that the driver should not be driving so fast in that area.

Driving too fast

"I'm just so sad and cut up. When I see from where the car hit him it was like two or three chains from where he landed. He shouldn't be driving so fast," Mr. Brown contended."

The Frome police said speeding featured in the accident.
