Architects must be registered
published: Thursday | October 26, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

With reference to your article of September 19, entitled 'Women building their homes', we would like to point out that Mr. Roy Fraser was erroneously called an architect.

In May this year, the Architects Registration Act was finally passed into law, and the Architects Registration Board is now pushing for compliance with this law.

Under the Architects Registration Act, it is a criminal offence for anyone in Jamaica to call him or herself an architect, or practise architecture without registration by the Architects Registration Board. In the same way that doctors and lawyers are governed by a registration body, it is for the protection of the public who can rely on the fact that the registered professional they hire is competent to carry out the job satisfactorily.

While we cannot comment on Mr. Fraser's competence, we can confirm that he is not registered and is, therefore, practising in breach of the act.

I am, etc.,

DOUGLAS STIEBEL

Acting Registrar
