The Editor, Sir:
I must commend Rev. Devon Dick for his piece Tuesday on the 'dutty wine' culture which has taken over our land. I wrote to The Gleaner some months ago about this particular dance as well as live sex and 'freaky' shows which have come to be part of the entertainment landscape of this country. This is a very sad reflection on us as a people because it says that we are a people who lack principle and accept anything that is thrown at us, and the more vulgar or obscene, the better.
I also agree with him that privacy is becoming a thing of the past. Up to last Saturday night I was outraged because CVM's Health Watch was very graphic in its presentation of breast examinations and the mammogram. What's next? A complete gynaecological examination, all in the name of health awareness?
In the United States and other developed countries, they still have the decency to block the most private body parts when presenting images, so why didn't it occur to the presenters and editors of this programme that this would have been more suitable.
All the media houses are guilty as well of interviewing family members in their most grief-stricken moments, after a loved one has died tragically. We really need to get back to basics in this country. Privacy needs to be respected, and that extends as well to private body parts and private acts, such as sex.
I am, etc.,
KAREN HENRY
