Arnett on the rise
published: Thursday | October 26, 2006

ARNETT GARDENS continued their rapid rise from the Wray and Nephew National Premier League doldrums following a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Reno at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.

The 'Junglists' got off to a flying start when Jonathan Williams burst into the area to flick past Reno custodian Kendrick Blair from six metres away in the 13th minute. They really looked to hit their stride when another lengthy bout of possession led to striker Marcelino Blackburn being brought down just inside the area. Cornell Chin-Sue then stepped up to cooly place the ball wide of Blair in the 17th minute to double Arnett's lead.

However, while the team from Westmoreland was down, it certainly was not out. Reliable goal-scorer Nicholai Findlayson pulled one back from the visitors from the spot in the 25th minute while, following up on a dominant Reno second-half spell, Ricardo Scott got them level in the 68th minute. Kevin Wilson produced Arnett's winner from a set piece just a minute later.

Wilson curled the ball around the wall and to the left of the keeper after Blair was judged to have committed an infringement by stepping outside his area when clearing the ball.

"I think the officiating was poor today, both teams played well but I don't understand the last goal. The goalkeeper simply picked the ball up and cleared it," said Reno assistant coach Aaron Lawrence.

For Arnett coach Glendon Bailey, who now sees his team move to fifth place on 10 points, the win was a satisfactory one.

" I am pleased with any three points," Bailey said.

"Some times you have to dig deep and we showed character today. An ugly win is always better than a pretty loss," he said.
