LETTER OF THE DAY - Corruption of power, or exertion of energy?
published: Friday | October 27, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

Power corruptsand absolute power corrupts completely. Absolute power also makes us fat and or lazy. And this is the state the PNP finds itself in. After 18 years in power every single person in the PNP is now either very fat and or very lazy. No one appears to bother to read, to research or even to reflect.

Any objective analysis of the performance of the ruling PNP will lead to that conclusion. Neither Portia, Peter, Pickersgill nor Paulwell, the upper echelons of the PNP, seems to make even an attempt to impress us with their knowledge or to engage with matters which are critical to the future of Jamaica.

Let us compare them with the JLP. In that party, the energy, effort and exertion are obvious. Clive Mullings did an excellent job following up with the questionable activities concerning the Nigerian oil deal. He also continues to impress with his 'stick-to-itiveness' regarding Mirant and JPS. Audley Shaw has been untiring with unearthing scandals and James Robertson is the 'everywhere', 'everything' man. He is like the indomitable 'Duracell bunny'.

But above them all, it is Bruce Golding who shines most brightly. He never ceases to impress. Whether it's his erudite presentations of the facts surrounding Trafigura, his defence of our human rights surrounding Cricket World Cup or his articulation of protocol and tradition pertaining to Samuda's censure motion, the man is a 'Golding' star.

I speak for the majority of well-thinking Jamaicans. We want to let in the light. The JLP team, the light after so many (too many) years of the fat and or lazy, is obviously ready and clearly more than capable.

I am, etc.,
