Oodles of doodles!
published: Tuesday | October 31, 2006

Are you a closet doodler? Do you dabble in scrawl when you think nobody's watching? When listening to a long speech or while talking on the telephone, do you find yourself drawing random shapes like triangles or even wine glasses on any piece of paper you can get your hands on? Well if you do, don't lock yourself in a room and whine about it, you may just be in excellent company!

Now for all you non-doodlers, a doodle is a simple drawing, sketch or scribble created impulsively while daydreaming or while mentally preoccupied with another activity. It's usually done without thinking and most times, the drawings mean very little.

Beverly East, graphologist and author, says that doodling is created subconsciously. "The doodler, in most cases, is in the process of doing something else, often marketing time. The act of doodling may release a myriad of feelings and even some hidden messages," she said.

Some of the most successful world leaders have been proud doodlers. Former United States Presidents John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon were notorious doodlers. In fact, the Kennedy Library has a section dedicated to the doodles of the former president. There, the drawings of Kennedy are put on display for all to see.

Leonardo da Vinci, the great thinker, artist and engineer was himself a great doodler. In fact, many of his inventions are said to have come from his doodling. What would have happened if the world was cut off from viewing these drawings? Who knows?

The people of the United Kingdom have gone as far as to declare March 3, National Doodle Day. They use the event, which grows bigger every year, to raise funds for epilepsy research.

But not everyone is proud of being a doodler. For these secretive scribblers, there's a hot item in the United States called the 'Don't let anyone find our doodling notebook'.

It looks like a normal notebook, but is designed for mindless scribbling. For less than US$10 you can doodle in comfort without having to worry about anyone looking over your shoulder, or heaven forbid, taking a photo of your private doodles.

But with all the big wigs who over the years have proudly displayed their doodles for the world to see, why not step out of the closet? Stand up and be proud that you are a doodler and doodle away to your heart's content.
