Arnett Gardens added another page to their resurgent story in the 2006-07 Wray & Nephew National Premier League (NPL) football competition on Sunday night when goals by Kevin Wilson and Leon Strickland gave them a 2-0 win over Seba United in a lacklustre game at Jarrett Park.
By virtue of the win, the Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey-coached Arnett Gardens team, which struggled badly at the start of the season, moved into the competition's top three with 13 points. Seba, which have been having a roller-coaster season, remain in mid-table on nine (9) points.
"I am pleased with the win, but I am happier with the unity I saw on the field today. The players were communicating with each other and working for each other," said coach Bailey. "We will have some things to work on but I think we are now moving in the right direction."
Seba's coach Geoffrey Maxwell bemoaned the absence of real potency in the offensive side of the team.
"We are missing far too many chances and I will continue to say that we will not do well as a team until we get two quality strikers who will put away our chances," said Maxwell. "Sadly, we can't do anything about it until the transfer window re-opens in January."
The game, which was fairly competitive in the first half, saw both teams trading early chances but not scoring.
The second half started with Arnett Gardens striking almost immediately. In the 50th minute, the crafty Wilson outfoxed two Seba defenders, dribbled into the goal area and fired home between the goalkeeper and the near post, making the score 1-0.
With Seba fighting back gamely but looking woefully out of touch before goal, Arnett Gardens struck for second time in the 76th minute. Wilson dribbled away on the right side and cut back a neat pass to Strickland. He initially fumbled but regained control and fired home, making the final score 2-0.
