Vendors rush cricket venues
published: Wednesday | November 1, 2006

BUNNY, the peanut man, and Miss May, the juice vendor, had until yesterday to secure a vending space in Jamaica's two stadia which will host games when the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup (CWC) arrives next year.

A CWC official said yesterday that persons were given every opportunity to secure spots in the venue through the four-week application process, but cautioned that everyone who applied will not be selected.

"The process was opened to everyone and now it is down to the selection," said Kim Bascombe, catering, vending and concessionaire projects manager.

Too early to tell

Ms. Bascombe said that it was too early to say how many applications were received. However, she said the response of persons to the process was overwhelming.

Applicants were asked to provide the CWC 2007 with their personal information, products they intend to sell, proposed prices and food and alcohol permits.

Over 100,000 visitors are expected to travel to the Caribbean for Cricket World Cup. In Jamaica, the multipurpose stadium in Trelawny will host the opening ceremony and warm-up matches while Sabina Park will host preliminary round games and a semi-final.

Ms. Bascombe said the persons selected to sell in the venues would offer food of local, regional and international flavours.
