The value of life
The Editor, Sir:
I write in response to Dr. Garth Rattray's column of October
30, "Learn from 'Ragashanti's' experience," where Dr. Rattray makes reference to the fact that many Jamaicans are still in denial of the existence of those "warped individuals" who "place zero value on life," for whom killing facilitates acquisition of property.
True, Dr. Rattray, but we also need to wake up to the fact that these who stand on the lower rungs of society ascribe to its remainder the same zero value they feel has been placed on their own lives. In their own minds, they are foraging for survival in a hostile and uncaring environment.
How much value has been placed on the lives of expectant mothers and their offspring in our neglect of the Victoria Jubilee Hospital? What clear message has this transmitted?
I am, etc.,
