BJ Hanna staff mourn slain general manager
published: Saturday | November 4, 2006

Petrina Francis, Staff Reporter

It was supposed to be a routine day at work for Rosa Goveia, general manager of B.J. Hanna and Sons. But little did the 37-year-old know that her life would be snuffed out by a lone gunman as she entered the company's compound in Kingston on Thursday.

Detective Inspector Webster Francis, divisional detective attached to St. Andrew Central, said about 8:10 a.m. Thursday, Ms. Goveia was about to enter her workplace, located on Retirement Crescent, St. Andrew, when a man on foot approached her and fired two shots hitting her. She was taken to the Medical Associates Hospital where she died while being treated.

Ex-worker Probe

No clear motive has been established for the murder but The Gleaner understands that the police are investigating whether Ms. Goveia's death was linked to the fact that several workers were laid off their jobs recently.

When The Gleaner visited Ms. Goveia's workplace yesterday, the gates to the premises were padlocked and no one was in sight. It is understood that the company closed its doors to allow for staff members to mourn the loss of their colleague.

Ms. Goveia was a member of the Swallowfield Chapel in St. Andrew. When The Gleaner contacted the institution, a member said the church family was too distraught to speak.
