The Editor, Sir:
"Jamaica the land of wood and water, now turn to motor vehicle and manslaughter". Many years ago I saw this inscribed on the animal hospital located on Spanish Town facing the May Pen Cemetery. Recently, I was reminded of this inscription by the scant regard being meted out by motorists to pedestrians at the new pedestrian crossing located a few chains from the western beginning of the Portmore toll road. Most of the drivers particularly formal and informal taxi operators display little or no attention to the pedestrian crossing even when pedestrians are on it. Many drivers appear not to know the significance of the
crossing.
Not Surprised
I would not be surprised to find out that a lot of motorists do not know that they should stop and give way when pedestrians, many of whom can be seen a long way off, are waiting to cross. This is also one of the few pedestrian crossings that is not now in need in painting. I sincerely hope that the police will start taking action to cause many of the offenders to treat the matter the way it ought to be treated.
I am, etc.,
