THE WATERFORD cricket team is still celebrating its victory after lifting the Tony Becca Cup following a 54-run win over Colours International in the Portmore Metropolitan Cricket League recently.
Courtney Elliot, captain of the Waterford team, said he felt good about this season's work: "I feel that this year's performances were mainly due to consistency and hard work."
He added that the team showed a lot of character after losing early wickets and made a respectable score. He said that batsman Courtney Francis and fast bowler Lascelles Davis stood out for the team.
The club had earlier in the season claimed the Milo-sponsored Under-15 title, the Charles Simpson Trophy in the RBTT-sponsored mid-season final and the Sharon Hay-Webster Cup for winning their preliminary round group.
Batting first in the final played at Bridgeport Sports Club two Sundays ago, Waterford struggled to 47 for four but recovered to post a challenging total of 188 for eight off their allotted 35 overs. Francis top-scored with 60 while Damion Foster, 32, and Gary Herbine, 30, also made useful scores.
Paul Harrison, with 4-19, took the most wickets for Colours International.
In reply, Colours International, newcomers to the league, could only mustered 134 all out after getting off to a fairly good start at 62 for two.
Brian Latore 27, former Jamaica opener Delroy Morgan, 19, and Dexter Barnaby, 20, were the best scorers against Lascelles Davis, 5-20, and Francis, 3-31.
Manager of Colours International, Lloyd Black, was not too disappointed with the result.
"It was a good season for us. It's our first season and we will come back from this (defeat). Waterford seemed to be the most consistent team this year and they deserve the victory," Black said, adding the difference between the two teams was the fielding, stating that Waterford fielded "brilliantly."
