LETTER OF THE DAY - Jamaica 'No problem?' That's a misnomer!
published: Tuesday | November 7, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Jamaica no problem! Whoever coined that phrase must have been deaf, dumb and blind. Think about it, can you name any public entity that provides the service it is supposed to? Let me give you a few examples.

Our Neighbourhood Watch has been lobbying to have one street light installed on East Kings's House Road for the past three and a half years. Requests to every agency or government body have fallen on deaf ears, been met with unfulfilled promises or just simply ignored.

Every day when you get into your car you take your life in your hands. Within a few minutes of being on the road you will encounter taxis, buses, or other motorists who believe that they can drive at any speed they wish, overtake in a manner that forces other users off the road or change lanes with no indication of their intentions. And where are the police in all of this, either nowhere to be found, turning a blind eye to the problems or taking bribes from the few drivers who are stopped.

Craters in the road

How far a journey can you make before you encounter a road where there are craters (they have long passed the stage of potholes) that are designed to destroy your vehicle or its tyres?

How many of us have lost appliances as a result of the fluctuating current provided at exorbitant rates by the Jamaica Public (Dis)Service Co. Ltd.?

Water lock-offs

How many times have you come home, hot and tired, turned on your taps only to be greeted by a hiss. For me this occurs both in and out of rainy seasons so do not blame it on the weather. Rather, give thanks to our friends at the NWC who glibly tell us that "water is life", yet turn around and deprive us of it, without notice and at the most inconvenient times.

How many times has your garbage piled up at your gates thanks to the "efficient service" offered by the NSWMA?

I could go on and on but why bother, nobody listens, nobody cares we all just do the very minimum that is required, sit back and say ...

JAMAICA NO PROBLEM!

I am, etc.,
