Port Antonio, Portland:
The two men charged with the murder of former World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion, Trevor Berbick, were again remanded when they appeared in court yesterday.
They are 20-year-old Harold Berbick, nephew of the deceased, and 18-year-old Kenton Gordon, both of Norwich district, Portland. The two appeared in the Buff Bay Resident Magis-trate's Court where the case was called up and put off until November 17.
Harold Berbick has retained the services of attorney-at-law, Carl McDonald, while Gordon is still without an attorney. Presiding judge Andrea Collins has recommended that the state provide Gordon with an attorney through the legal aid system.
No submission has been made for bail for the younger Berbick by his attorney.
According to investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Kenneth Bailey, investigations are still ongoing and bail at this time could seriously compromise the outcome of the investigation.
Chop wounds
The body of the former boxing champion was found about 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, with four chop wounds to the head, near his home at Norwich in the parish.
He was 52 years old at the time of his death and was the last person to fight and defeat the legendary Muhammad Ali.
Berbick will be laid to rest on Saturday in Port Antonio after a thanksgiving service at the Anglican church in the parish. He was last seen alive at a popular night spot in his hometown, several hours before he was brutally murdered.
