RENO KEPT their slim hopes of nabbing a spot in the Wray and Nephew National Premier League first end-of-round final alive when they got by August Town 2-0 at the UWI Bowl yesterday.

Two goals in the space of three minutes knocked the wind out of the sails of an August Town team, which had dominated the play early on but failed to net glaring opportunities.

Defender Dwayne Williams reacted quickly to head a ball, flicked on by Gary McIntosh from a corner, powerfully past August Town custodian Devon Haughton to put his team ahead in the 41st minute.

Just two minutes later Nyron Davis caught the home team napping and, given the space just outside of the 18-yard area, fired low and hard far to the right of Haughton to put his team further ahead.

"We are very pleased with a win away from home today. It wasn't really a pretty one, but I am definitely satisfied with all three points," said Reno's assistant coach Aaron Lawrence.

Points welcomed

"Any point away from home is always a good one. We have a big game at home against Portmore next week and we are looking forward to that one," said Lawrence, who still sees his team with a chance to make it to the end-of-round finals.

Three changes at the start of the second half, the most influential of which being Gary Brooks who gave August Town, who suffered their first home loss of the season, a renewed sense of purpose up front, just could not get the home team on the board.

At the start of play, August Town, after a positive spell of football, seemed to have caught a break when the man in charge pointed to the spot for what he deemed to be a hand ball.

However, after consulting with the linesman, he reversed the call as it was in fact Reno custodian Dwayne Kerr who had on similar gear to his outfield teammate who had made the save.

"We have been creating the opportunities and not finishing them. We had the first two chances and should have been ahead,"said August Town coach Christopher Bender.

"With a little more luck, even after we went down, we could have equalised but that's the game of football," he said.
