Trafigura: more questions than answers
published: Friday | November 10, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

As the debate over the Trafigura Beheer's $31 million donation to the People's National Party continues, it is quite disturbing that all who have made any attempt to speak to the matter from within the party at the executive level are seemingly ignorant of the facts surrounding the 'commercial donations', to quote Paul Burke, as conveyed in a radio interview with Cliff Hughes on Tuesday, November 7, 2006.

It is quite evident that there are more questions than answers. The party's hierarchy is either totally oblivious or, in arrogance, have convinced themselves that those of us in civil society and the media who continue to seek answers are merely being a trifling nuisance.

Would it not be in the party's best interest to speak out and bring closure to the matter and so avert any possible fallout in the support of the electorate in view of impending elections?

Is it that the Prime Minister's efforts to get all the facts are being somehow impeded, or does she now have the information at hand but cannot disclose such to the nation for whatever reason?

It is inconceivable to me that the Prime Minister, in her capacity as president of the party which forms the government, could somehow view the matter as not warranting her authoritative stamp.

I am, etc.,

FABIAN E. SANCHEZ
