The welfare officer at the Police Federation has stepped down in response to the million-dollar fraud allegations at the Jamaica Constabulary Welfare Fund.
Constable Cecil McCalla, who had day-to-day management responsibilities for the fund, resigned yesterday.
According to Corporal Hartley Stewart, general secretary of
the Police Federation, Constable McCalla felt that if he had acted in a more responsible manner, the alleged million-dollar fraud could have been uncovered earlier.
Meanwhile, a former female employee of the Police Federation is scheduled to appear in court next Thursday to answer to charges related to the fraud.
Constable Camille Richards remains in custody for the 34 instances of financial irregularities involving the Police Welfare Fund.
Corporal Stewart said the federation held an emergency meeting during which the membership was updated on the sequence of events.
