B'port play waiting game
published: Saturday | November 11, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Bridgeport High are now play the waiting game despite a 3-0 win over Jonathan Grant at the Spanish Town Prison Oval in ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup Group One action yesterday.

"We played well today, we could have got more goals, but I think it's all a little too late, we should have been winning games earlier but now we will just have to wait and see," said Bridgeport's coach Anthony Patrick.

The Portmore-based team, which would have been hoping for a draw between Excelsior and now eliminated Camperdown, still have a shot at the semi-finals as one of the best second-place teams.

However, it is a remote one and a number of scenarios will have to go the way of the 2001 champions.

In Group Two, Norman Manley would have to lose or draw their game against Wolmer's and defending champions Calabar will have to beat Waterford.

In a tight Group Three, a win for either Eltham or Spanish Town would also be in their favour, while a Charlie Smith loss to Jamaica College would also see them through.

Striker Andre Clennon slammed in a hat-trick, netting in the 12th, 17th and 20th minutes in a furious 25-minute spell of first-half football from the St. Catherine team. However, a lacklustre performance in the second half saw Jonathan Grant with several opportunities to find the back of the net.

Jonathan Grant's coach C. Alexander Parks, who saw his team come into the encounter already eliminated, was also disappointed with his team's finishing.

"We started poorly but came out better in the second half, but we just could not score the goals. Nonetheless, we are a young team and we will be back."
