Vernon registers surprise victory
published: Saturday | November 11, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Dane Vernon topped off a fairy tale run when he got the better of fifth seeded Atton Burrell, emerging men's Class 1 champion as the Wigton Windfarm Amateur Tennis Classic, the third in the five-match series Trafalgar Travel Amateur Tennis Championships, which came to a close at the Liguanea Club earlier this week.

Vernon, who came into the tournament seeded at seven, made quick work of Burrell, sweeping through the first set 6-1 before taking the second 6-2 for a comprehensive victory.

The win saw Vernon, who had previously ousted number two seeded Yussuf Migoko in the competition's semi-finals, move to 145 points but still trails men's Class 1 overall leader and defending champion Dwayne Pagon, who remains out in front with 190 points.

Pagon was knocked out by Burrell, who has 125 points.

In top spot

In men's Class 2 action Carl Blissett moved himself into a tie for the top spot, after emerging victorious 7/6, 2/6, 7/5 after a long battle with Howard Powell in the men's class two final.

Blissett is now on 140 points, the same as Ali McNab, while Michael Lawrence is in third place with 120 points.

In men's Class 3 play Richard Harris has taken over from Marlon Brown following his 6/0, 2/1 victory over Terrence Forrester in the final.

Forrester retired with an injury in the second set. Forrester moved to 190 points, followed by Ruddy Chin on 170 and then Brown on 165.

Andrez Coy snatched his second title in a row in the men's Class 4 category when he beat Nigel Taylor 6-3, 6-4.

Number one post

Taylor, who was also runner-up at the last tournament, is now second in the category on 150 points. Coy leads with 200 points.

In the women's category Sasha Hanna regained her number one post when she defeated junior Danielle Monteith 7-6, 6-3 in the final. Both women share the same points total with 120 each.
