Caribbean briefs

  • Police arrest six in death of two brothers

    SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP):

Six men have been arrested in connection with a shooting that killed two Taiwanese students in the Dominican Republic, police say.

The two brothers, Chen Ying Ho, 22, and Chen Huei Kao, 18, were killed November 4 at their home in Bonao, a mountain city about 92 kilometers (57 miles) north of Santo Domingo. Five other Taiwanese people were injured in the shooting.

Robbery was believed to the motive for the attack, said Tomas Chen, a spokesman for the Taiwanese Embassy in Santo Domingo.

The brothers had been studying in the Caribbean country for more than three years, said Tomas Chen, spokesman for the Taiwanese Embassy in Santo Domingo.

  • US actress a political liability

    NASSAU, Bahamas (AP):

Anna Nicole Smith has become an election-season liability for the Bahamian government, which has had to defend its decision to grant her permanent residency while the former reality TV star fights eviction from a secluded waterfront mansion.

Smith's quick path to Bahamian residency and the high priority given to an investigation into her son's mysterious death are eclipsing the economy and other issues in political debates as the island chain prepares for general elections next year.

The former Playboy Playmate moved to The Bahamas in July and gave birth to a baby girl in September with little public fanfare. That changed when her 20-year-old son, Daniel, died while visiting Smith at the hospital three days after the baby was born. A private examiner concluded he died from a lethal combination of methadone and two antidepressants.

  • Chinese housing officials arrive

    ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (AP):

Chinese engineers and surveyors have arrived in Grenada to begin drafting plans for a housing project to help the Caribbean country recover from two devastating hurricanes in recent years, officials said.

The team of seven specialists will spend three weeks conducting surveys and technical assessments to build 2,000 homes in Grenada, said press secretary Barry Collymore.

Hurricane Ivan swept through Grenada in September 2004, leaving at least 39 people dead and 90 per cent of homes damaged or destroyed. In July 2005, Hurricane Emily's winds tore up at least 100 homes, tore roofs from 2,000 more, destroyed crops and flooded scores of buildings.
