Tourists raft down the Rio Grande in Portland. - Norman Grindley/Deputy Chief Photographer
Another reason that Jamaica is loved by foreigners is for its lovely rivers that offer an exhilarating rafting experience.
Take in the wonders of the water and gorgeous lush greenery, read a book or have a worthwhile conversation with your children while being floated by a poleman-guide-skipper on a raft.
Jamaica is a beautiful country and a wonderful way to explore its rivers is by rafting. Before you head off on your bamboo ride, plan to get wet and wear comfortable clothing and swim wear, and sun screen.
Here are a few places to go rafting.
Martha Brae River Rafting
Where: Claude Clarke Ave., Montego Bay, St. James
Contact: 952-0889
As you glide downstream, observe the mango, breadfruit and calabash trees; listen to the chirps of the birds and be educated about the Martha Brae River.
Enjoy a refreshing drink, have a snack or lunch or swim in the pool.
Black River Safari Tour
Where: Black River, St. Elizabeth (just past the Black River Bridge)
Contact: 965-2513
Crocodiles lazing in the water; dopey-looking manatees; and flora and fauna in gorgeous hues of green. A Black River Safari tour will give you these and more. Leisurely rafting trips centred around watching the birds and river animals like the crocodiles.
Rafting on the Rio Grande

Contact: 993-5778
Sip on ice-cold jelly coconut while taking a ride on a sturdy bamboo raft. The three-hour journey ends where the river meets the sea. At the venue is also a restaurant, bar and souvenir shop and changing rooms.
